The milkmaid braid is a great match for my own style. So I was very irritated when I couldn’t completely grasp it. My hair was either too short, the braids were too thin, or the bobby pins were always in the wrong position. I tried a “faux” milkmaid braid when my hair was a little too short, but it didn’t have the same impact. Now that my hair has finally reached the appropriate length, I’ve started practicing. I’ve figured out a few tricks to perfecting the milkmaid braid, and I’m going to share them with you in this easy step-by-step guide.

To begin, you’ll need the appropriate tools. Make sure your hair hasn’t been washed lately. You want texturing to keep it in place. Apply texturizing spray to your hair if it’s extremely smooth and falls out of braids easily. Then, make sure you have 6 bobby pins (in a color that matches your hair) and 2 clear elastics on hand. Now take the following steps:

Was it simple enough to understand? Don’t worry if you still need assistance. I’ve made this handy diagram to teach you where and how to put the bobby pins. Begin at the beginning of the first braid. Instead of wrapping the bobby pin around the whole braid, loop it in the center and slide it to the back of your head. After that, put a pin a few inches up and a third at the braid’s finish (on the other side of your head). Make careful to tuck the ends of the braids underneath before you pin on the other side.

Braids are the most popular hairstyle for women out there—in fact, they’re so popular that some schools actually encourage girls to wear braids as a uniform. But not all braids are created equally: the classic, loose Dutch braid is usually a time-consuming process that requires a series of intricate steps, while the French braid is much simpler and more flexible, and more importantly, a lot more stylish..
