Milkmaid Braids for Short or Fine Hair

Milkmaid braids are a more modern twist on an old-school hairstyle. Traditionally purple, it’s a beautiful, elegant look that is meant to be worn by those who want to add a touch of glamour to their appearance. It’s not a style for everyone, though—the MILKBAID acronym, for example, stands for Milkmaid Bob—and some women may find it just too aggressive. However, if you’re looking to upgrade your look, try out this braiding technique.

The milkmaid braid is one of my favorite hair styles, especially if you have short or fine hair. The style leaves your hair soft, sleek and allows for a feminine and elegant look. The design is versatile enough to work with many hair types and styles.

The secret to a good looking (and more importantly, comfortable) haircut always lies in the braid, right?. Well, as it turns out, the milkmaid braid is much more than a hairstyle–instead, it’s a hairstyling technique that is in fact rooted in a centuries old wine making technique.

Milkmaid braids – you know, the braids that wrap around your head – have always been a favorite of mine. They always seemed to be difficult, but they’re really very easy! The issue is that my hair has never been long or thick enough to achieve the desired appearance. So, after some trial and error, I came up with a fake milkmaid braided hairdo that looks just like the genuine thing but is suitable for all hair types. Follow the steps in the video below!

Inside-Out French Braids (Step 1)

Does it seem to be difficult? It isn’t, I promise! Instead of constantly crossing hair over the center part, inside-out french braids cross the centre section over the outer sections. This results in a braid that appears inside-out or backwards, and is thicker than a normal french braid. I guarantee you can accomplish it if you follow these instructions. If this seems to be too difficult, just use normal french braids :).

Step 2: Braids for Milkmaids

It’s time to pin your hair into that fake milkmaid braid style now that you’ve made two french braids and fastened them with clear elastics. All you have to do now is wrap one braid around your head and tuck it beneath the other. Then, right behind your ear, pin it to the end of the braid, concealing it behind the other braid. Secure the entire braid on your head with pins. Bring the second braid around and under the first, pinning it slightly behind your ear. As required, add pins until it seems secure.

If the braids at the top of your head seem to be excessively tight, pull them apart slightly to loosen them up. Remove a few tiny pieces to frame your face, then spray your hair with a ton of hairspray and you’re done!
