How to Use Oil Cleansers

When we talk about oil cleansers, we’re generally referring to a type of cleanser that uses oil as an ingredient to remove makeup and clean the skin. And while many people find oil cleansers to be an effective method of cleaning makeup and removing dirt and dead skin cells, they also tend to be a little less gentle on the skin than other types of cleansers.

Interested in using oil-based cleansers, but not sure how to clean your face? Let us help you out! There are many different ways to use oil-based cleansers, so read on to learn about our go-to methods.

You’ve got a new bottle of cleanser and you’ve only got so much time before you have to get ready for work. What do you do? You use your best judgment and end up with a clean face, but your face feels dry and itchy. Here’s what you should do:

While many of us are reluctant to use oil cleansers because of the term “oil,” I’d want to dispel that myth and share my good experience with them. Most cleansers make my skin feel tight since I have dry, sensitive skin. In fact, I seldom go a minute without having to apply a thick moisturizer to offset the effects of my previous cleansers. However, when a dermatologist informed me that skin should simply feel like skin, I understood that these ostensibly “gentle” cleansers weren’t appropriate for me.

So I decided to give oil cleansers a try, specifically bareMinerals Oil Obsessed Total Cleansing Oil. After washing my face with this stuff, my skin actually feels soft and I’m not in a rush to lather on the moisturizing cream. Not only does it feel smooth & soft, but it also feels clean, which sort of surprised me. I wouldn’t, however, rely on it to remove all of my makeup that’s been sitting on my skin all day, so I prefer to use my oil cleanser in the morning (and this milky one at night). Applying the oil cleanser is a bit of a unique process as well, so I wanted to show you how to do it right.

1. Use on dry skin

Oil cleansers work best when applied to dry skin rather than washing with water as you would usually. If you’re wearing makeup, I’d suggest removing it with a cleaning wipe first, then patting your face dry before using the oil cleanser.

2. Apply to the skin.

Massage the oil cleanser into your skin for 30 seconds to a minute in a circular motion.

3. Squeeze in a smidgeon of water

Continue the circular movements on your face by running your fingertips under warm water. As the pollutants are washed away, the oil cleanser will become a milky white. Rinse well after another 30 seconds of lather.

4. Rinse thoroughly

Now you may wash your face with a large quantity of water to remove the residue. Dry by gently patting your towel on your skin to absorb the moisture. Your skin should be silky smooth and moisturized, as well as providing a smoother, more hydrated surface for your cosmetics!
