As you may have seen, I have completely shaved my head. It’s not all of it, but it certainly feels that way! I’ll confess that I’ve had some difficulty finding out how to style my new ‘do on a daily basis as I’ve been getting accustomed to it, which takes time. I wanted to put it up in my normal sloppy bun for a bit, but those small hairs in the back kept coming out. Then I experimented with my curling iron, trying out the same technique I did on my long hair. Even though I was getting closer, it still seemed a bit too styled.

I finally had the guts to use my straightener. I’ve never been able to curl my hair with a straightener, but it’s lot simpler with short hair for some reason. Changing my thinking approach was beneficial. Instead of creating ringlets with the flat iron, I began adding one basic wave to each strand of hair. So, instead of twisting the flat iron all the way around like a curling iron, I only twisted it once to get a fast wave. And it was successful! So, of course, I’ll have to teach you how to do it yourself!

Step 1

Begin with hair that is fairly straight. You may either blow dry it or use your flat iron to rapidly dry hair. Now apply a ton of texturing spray to ensure that the waves stay in place and give you that sloppy appearance. This is a crucial step that must not be skipped!! I’ve experimented with a few different texturing sprays and have three favorites that I alternate between: The Thickening Dryspun Finish Spray by Bumble + Bumble, the Oribe Dry Texturing Spray by Oribe, and the Kerastase V.I.P Volume in Powder Finishing Spray by Kerastase are all fantastic.

Step 2

I prefer to split my hair into two parts and work my way down. The size of the pieces you curl now has a significant impact on the final appearance. Choose smaller portions if you want a more disheveled appearance. Choose bigger portions if you want a more disheveled, bedhead appearance. I used bigger portions for this design (about 1-2 inches depending on how thick your hair is).

Step 3

After that, grip the flat iron approximately 2 inches down and twist your wrist once to direct the curl away from your face. Then slowly move the iron down (loosen the clamp a little to make it easier), releasing once you’re about an inch from the ends.

Step 4

Rep with the next section of hair, twisting it in the other way (towards your face). To get that chaotic, carefree appearance, change the direction of the curl each time.

Step 5

Repeat the procedure with the following layer of hair, twisting the front portions away from your face.

Step 6

Apply a little hairspray to the waves and shake them out to muss them up a little.
