All the Bedding Basics You Need to Create Your Perfect Bedroom

Bedrooms are our place to relax, be alone, and sleep. It’s essentially the most private and personal place for us to spend time and recharge. But just like the rest of our lives, our bedroom can become cluttered, stale, and boring pretty quickly. That’s why it’s so important to have a healthy and functional bedroom, that’s comfortable and functional. Here are some tips on how to get your bedroom into tip-top shape:

Every time I go to a flea market I buy some of my favorite vintage bedding pieces like old quilts and old bedspreads. I love the way they look and feel and I know they always bring in buyers at the flea market. You can create a bed that looks like a million bucks and it doesn’t cost that much either! Check out my bedding tutorial for some tips on what you can do with old bedding.

Bedding is one of those areas that can make or break a bedroom. It’s important, especially for the bedroom, to have everything you need to make it a comfortable and welcoming place, but it can be costly and tricky. As every person has different tastes, it can be hard to know what to get and how to get it.

I recall my first trip to the store to get bedding for my college dorm room. It was freshman year, and for the first time, I went to the closest shopping mall and bought the cheapest white sheets I could find. I had no clue what a thread count was (and still don’t), or what the distinction between down and down-alternative meant.

After a few years, I’ve perfected the skill of making the softest, most comfortable bed without going crazy on the price. Are you ready to turn your bedroom into your happy place from the ground up? Here’s how to do it.

Mattress No. 1

Whether you’re moving to a new apartment or updating your current one, the mattress is always the first piece of furniture you start with. It’s really the canvas on which you build the rest of your bedroom. As a city dweller, I look for both comfort & ease of delivery when selecting my mattress. So when I discovered Cocoon by Sealy, I knew I had found the perfect solution.

First and foremost, it arrives in a box! That alone makes it worthwhile for me since it’s very simple to get delivered and set up. It’s not too hefty and rolls smoothly straight out of the box. Second, it’s almost as if you’re sleeping on a cloud. Personally, I like a plush mattress that I can sink into at the end of the day. It’s the ideal foundation for my warm, comfortable happy space, which I refer to as my bedroom. You can buy one online here, along with a 100-night trial to try it out for yourself :).

2. Sheets

Begin with a traditional sheet set, which includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two standard pillowcases. The thread count, the kind of fibers, and the type of weave should all be taken into account.

  • In most instances, you won’t want to go below a thread count of 300 or 400. While it is generally true that the greater the thread count, the higher the quality, this is not always the case. That’s when you have to think about the fibers.
  • For a softer feel, seek for longer fibers made of Egyption Cotton, Organic Cotton, Pima, or Bamboo. Some more inexpensive choices (even with high thread counts) utilize poorer quality fibers, so look for longer fibers made of Egyption Cotton, Organic Cotton, Pima, or Bamboo.
  • If you reside in a colder area, a Sateen weave may be preferable since it retains heat better. To stay cool at night in our moderate California environment, I like a Percale weave.

Pillows 3

When choosing pillows for your bed, think about the various sizes, the number of pillows you want, and the material they’re made of.

  • The size of your pillows will be determined by the size of your bed and your own preferences. You’ll need two regular pillows and two euro pillows for a full or queen-size bed (that’s what I have!). Some individuals like four regular pillows; the choice is entirely yours.
  • You may choose between down and down-alternative pillows when it comes to cushion types. Down is the most opulent choice, and it will cost more. Personally, I believe there are lots other down-alternative choices (like these!) that are just as comfy and far more inexpensive.

4. Duvet

A soft, comfortable duvet, in my opinion, is important for making the ideal bed. You’ll have to decide between down and down-alternative choices once again.

  • A down comforter’s advantage is that it is better at regulating temperature throughout the night, making it perfect for hot sleepers. But, once again, it will be more costly.
  • There are a plethora of comfy down-alternative alternatives available. Simply ignore microfiber alternatives in favor of polyester fibers that simulate the feel of genuine down.
