As a woman of color, black women tend to be concerned with makeup more than white women, but that doesn’t mean that all black women have the same makeup routine. If your makeup routine is as simple and quick as watching TV and then heading out to the grocery store, then you are doing it wrong.   True beauty is more than makeup. Beauty is about being confident with your skin, and the way you present yourself. It’s about being healthy, and maintaining a life that brings you joy.

Today we’re going to go over a basic makeup routine, but one that is both easy and quick to implement. Before we begin, a note about makeup: I am not a makeup expert, nor am I a professional makeup artist. I am, however, a very talented amateur who happens to use makeup on a regular basis. I have been doing this on and off since I was a pre-teen, and I’ve figured out a few tricks along the way. I’m not saying I’m a pro, but I am saying that I know how to apply my makeup well and in the shortest amount of time possible.. We all have a lot of makeup, much more than we need, but how do you determine what’s worth preserving, what items to use, and what you may be using incorrectly? Yesterday was an eventful Sunday for me. Through Maestro Market, a new online platform that links you directly with inexpensive professionals of various sorts, I had a fantastic Skype session with makeup artist Troy Edwards. He took me through a simple, daily makeup regimen using items I already had and showed me how to apply them properly step by step. He began by getting to know my own style, both in terms of fashion and beauty, before moving on to the fun part. We went through every single cosmetics item I had (not kidding, every single item) and divided them into piles:

He asked me to describe what I like and don’t like about each thing. Then he directed me to which pile I should place it in. It felt great to get rid of all of the junk that had been collecting in my cosmetics box. He offered me a one-on-one tutorial on how to utilize the items we decided to retain after we completed sorting the cosmetics. Let me tell you, I thought I was doing a good job with my cosmetics, but I was completely incorrect. Even the tiniest changes made a big impact. Take a look at this:

Step 1: Laying the Groundwork

We concluded that using my NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer was the best option since my skin is dry. I’d always used my hands to apply makeup, but he taught me how to use my liquid foundation brush. To begin, dab the product in four places on your face with your fingertips. Then mix it with the brush. Brush your hair back and forth over your brow. Brush your cheeks down and away from your face’s center. Brush your chin back and forth as well.

Step 2: Using a concealer

I’d been using the Benefit Boi-ing Concealer for a while, but it was starting to feel heavy and cakey beneath my eyes. He demonstrated an excellent technique for blending the product smoothly. Before applying the product, dab a dollop of moisturizer on your brush. Then dab the product beneath your eyes four times. Use your middle finger to gently dab beneath your eyes after smoothing with the brush. The warmth of your finger will assist blend the concealer even more for a more natural look. This Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat brightener is also one of my favorites. The radiant look it gives on the skin is one of my favorites.

3rd step: powder

I had no clue, but I’d been applying my powder with the incorrect brush for far too long. He suggested I use this tiny kabuki brush from bareMinerals instead. He recommended buffing it into the skin in circular movements for a natural appearance.

Bronzer (Step 4)

This is when he really astounded me. With all of the contouring discussion going on, I was completely baffled as to how to utilize my bronzer to its full potential. He advised against contouring during the day since it’s designed for low-light situations such as on stage or for a night out. I’d also been using the incorrect brush for this. A big fluffy brush should be used to apply bronzer, which I already have but had never used. Swirl the brush in the product, tap it to remove some of the product (essential! ), and then begin with your cheeks. Sweep the brush up and down your cheek, beginning at the outside and working your way in. Rep on the other side. After that, work on your brow, chin, and neck.

Step 5: Apply a rosy tint to your cheeks.

That’s right, you guessed it. I was also using the incorrect brush for this. Blush needs a brush that is both fluffy and thick, such as the one shown below. He also persuaded me to try a new color that I hadn’t tried previously. I’ve usually preferred peachy tones, but this petal pink is really lovely and complements my skin tone. Apply on the apples of your cheeks while smiling.

Step 6: Examine your eyes

It was fantastic to learn a basic eye makeup regimen that could be used on a daily basis. I begin by applying a “bone” colored shadow to my whole lid. Use a fluffy shadow brush if you have one; I didn’t have one, so I simply used my finger. Then, using a denser shadow brush, dab the product at the bottom of your lid and work your way up to the crease, rather than sweeping it. This is a fantastic technique to add shadow to adjust the intensity of the color while avoiding putting product on your cheekbones. He liked how I used an angled brush, a little water, and powder liner to apply my eyeliner (woohoo!). For my blue eyes, he suggested navy. When it comes to mascara, he suggests putting the brush on a tissue first, then wriggling it down the lash line and sweeping it up.

Lips (Step 7)

Lips, last but not least! He suggested a lovely mix of light pink lipstick (bareMinerals Moxie Lipstick in Speak Your Mind) and coral gloss for daily (bareMinerals Moxie Lipgloss in Party Starter). He also taught me a fantastic technique to apply bright colored lipstick that isn’t overpowering, which I confessed was a concern of mine. Simply apply a little amount of lipstick on your bottom lip and press your lips together for a burst of color. Then apply a layer of gloss to bring the color out even more.
