The age of the traditional career is over. As the generation of millennials continues to enter the workforce, the traditional career path is becoming obsolete. Instead of spending your 20’s and 30’s in a 9-to-5 position, it’s time to decide where to live after graduation. Finding the right place to live can be difficult for new grads. There are a few options to consider:
It’s a new beginning, for you and your family. Whether you’re moving from one state to another or moving from the United States to another country, you’re nearing the end of a long road traveled. There’s a lot of decisions to be made: which state will be the right place for you? Which city will be the right place for you to start your new career? Which school will be the right place for you to acquire a new skill? But, the hard part is deciding which city will be the right place for you and your family.
It’s not easy to make the biggest decision of your life—that’s why we’re here to help. When it comes to college, you know the big picture: where you want to live, what school you want to go to, and what kind of job you want to have. But the big picture isn’t the only thing that matters when you’re trying to decide where to live. Where you live now will impact where you can afford to live after graduation, if you need to move to be closer to your job, and the kinds of things you can do to make that new city your home.
It’s a truth that the end of college is a strange period. You’ve finished two decades of schooling, are expected to obtain a “real” job, and must generally locate a place to live and begin your adult life. Do you visit your parents on a regular basis? Is this a brand-new city? There are many considerations when it comes to location, and the best option is dependent on your specific circumstances. But the best thing is that now is a great opportunity to try out new locations. Plus, nothing lasts forever! Here are a few possibilities for post-graduation housing:
Together with your parents
It’s not the most attractive option on the list, but it’s a good one. It’s a wonderful chance for a last safety net if your parents are kind enough to let you crash. Especially if you’re still looking for work and don’t have to worry about paying rent. Just keep in mind that readjusting to non-independence may be difficult. After 6 months of living with my parents after school, I knew I needed to get my act together because I was going insane.
If you don’t have a job, aren’t sure where you want to live, or are in debt, this is a good alternative.
To a new location
Moving again is probably not as frightening if you went to college in a different location than your hometown. If you have a group of friends from college who all want to go to the same location, it may be a lot of fun—but also a lot of money! It may also come up if you are offered a job in a different city. What is my recommendation? Accept it! You may always return.
If the employment market is flourishing and related to your hobbies, you enjoy the vibe/weather, you’re willing to take a risk, your parents are still supporting you, and you have some kind of financial cushion, this is a good choice. Moving to a new location may also affect your taxes—more than likely just your state taxes rather than your federal taxes. Keep in mind that you must file your tax return based upon the state you reside in and as such, some states offer more favorable tax benefits than others. Regardless of where you end up, you can find options for free tax filing online to get a better idea of how your location will impact your tax return.
Stay in the place where you attended college.
Staying there in that town/city, depending on where you went to school, may make perfect sense. Maybe you’ve fallen in love with the region or haven’t seen all it has to offer yet. You won’t be on your own! I have a number of pals who are still living in the city where we attended college. I’d just make sure you really like it and aren’t simply doing it for the sake of convenience.
If you have a work you love, enjoy the community, and are happy there, but aren’t sure where to go next, this is a good choice.
Abroad
This may be for you if you studied abroad in college and want to do more, or if you are feeling sheltered and want to go out. In general, post-college is an excellent time to travel, and living in a foreign place is more practical since you can work. Find a career that is related to what you want to do in the future, or if you are unsure, find odd jobs and save money to travel more. And, if you have student debt, set aside part of that money each month to pay it off.
If you’re not sure what career you want, you have travel money, and you’ve traveled overseas previously and enjoyed it, this is a good choice.
While there may seem to be a lot to consider, keep in mind that what works for a buddy may not be the ideal option for you. Consider where you are post-graduation and do what seems appropriate; if it turns out to be a disaster, adapt. You’ve got it!
